We live in a world where the most common family model is a mother, father, and one or several children. Other types of family are considered to be incomplete, strange or even forbidden.
But the common family, which is scientifically called nuclear family, has only been around for a short time – it emerged during the industrial revolution, when poor people moved to the cities and worked long days in the factory.
Prior to that, most people lived in villages, but even in cities the general population lived in extended families, consisting of mother, father, children, grandparents and great-grandmother or father, as well as uncles, aunts, nephews.
Nowadays, in big cities most people live alone. The fastest growing type of family is a single father with a child. The “normal” type of family composes no more than one third of all families and is quickly disappearing.
The only country where the number of “normal families” continues to increase is China, which is still undergoing industrialization.
